Leveraging High-Impact Tutoring to Lift our Schools
Our Story
Every child deserves the opportunity to succeed, not just in the classroom, but in life.

This simple yet powerful belief inspired the creation of TutorSmart, a transformative initiative launched in Toledo.
​
2016 our community faced a stark reality: too many children fell short of grade-level proficiency. They were starting behind and staying behind. Refusing to accept this status quo, a group of dedicated community leaders joined forces with the Toledo Community Foundation to take action. They commissioned a comprehensive study by Lourdes University to examine tutoring services across Greater Toledo, uncovering both challenges and opportunities in the local educational landscape.

The findings were eye-opening. While individual organizations were making a difference, no single entity could tackle the significant issues of learning loss and the achievement gap alone. What Toledo needed was a unified, systematic approach to after-school tutoring, one that would bring together existing providers, enhance quality, and ensure that every child in need had access to support.

This vision became a reality in August 2017 with the establishment of TutorSmart, a community-wide, out-of-school-time organization. Our approach is uniquely collaborative: rather than creating a separate system, we partner with existing tutoring providers and schools to maximize resources and create lasting impact. By leveraging the strengths of each partner, we achieve more together than any organization could accomplish on its own.

Today, TutorSmart catalyzes educational excellence in Greater Toledo. We provide guidance, structure, and best practices to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of tutoring services, whether delivered through schools or after-school programs. By coordinating efforts across the community, we are working to ensure high-quality, classroom-aligned tutoring is accessible to every student who needs it.

Our story continues to evolve, with each student’s success adding a new chapter to our journey. Through collaboration and an unwavering commitment to excellence, we are building a future where every child in Greater Toledo has the tools and support they need to thrive, academically and beyond.
